Lurgi originally was known as Metallurgische Gesellschaft, a German producer of non-ferrous metals that was founded in 1897. It began a process and vessel engineering department in response to the rapidly expanding markets, according to the company. Throughout the 20th century, Lurgi added new capabilities, such as building processes and equipment for pressure gasification and atmospheric gasification.

Originally known as Process Systems Inc., the company that eventually became Lurgi PSI was founded more than 30 years ago and became one of the United States’ leading general contractors specializing in plants. The company was acquired by Lurgi in 1997.
