Earning a reputation for “high quality, innovation and customer satisfaction throughout Colorado,” Encore Electric says it strives to be the state’s electrical contractor of choice by providing full-service pre-construction, construction and maintenance services. Based in Englewood, Colo., and with a mountain office location in Avon, Colo., Encore also is licensed to do work in California, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, South Dakota, Utah, Nevada and Wyoming.

Encore provides design/build and design/assist services primarily to large general contractors in the healthcare, commercial office, hospitality and alternative energy markets. Eighty percent of its work is from large construction projects, and 20 percent is from maintenance services.

Encore was founded in 2003 by a group of individuals – President Willis Wiedel, Executive Vice Presidents Garry Lawrenz, David White and Vicki Waters and Vice Presidents Jeff Thompson, Gary Littlefield and Marlin Linder. This founding team had previously worked together at another successful electrical subcontracting firm before founding Encore. Some of the team members have been together for more than 20 years. “Over the last five years, I think our corporate culture, quality of our people and our consistency in providing quality services to our customers has made us unique,” Wiedel states.

Executive Vice President Garry Lawrenz adds that Encore’s consistency stands out in the industry. “We consistently perform well in pre-construction services, construction services and financial strength,” he says.

In addition, the company’s safety philosophy is unmatched, Thompson states. “Our employees appreciate the safety and training we provide – they tell us that,” he says. “We’re hiring the best people and we feel we have the obligation to provide the safest environment in the industry.
“Our goal is to provide them the training to be the best at what they do at all levels of the organization.”

Major Projects
Encore has considerable expertise and experience in the healthcare field, with work on more than 20 of Colorado’s medical facilities and hospitals since 2003. “Several of our projects have required major electrical upgrades while the hospital – including emergency and life-safety systems – were in operation,” Lawrenz says. “This presented unique challenges and required in-depth knowledge, not to mention veteran-led planning and execution.”

Encore performs about 50 large construction projects a year. Some recent notable projects include:

  •  The new Denver County Courthouse
  •  A 40-story Four Seasons Hotel & Residences in downtown Denver
  •  A high-end condominium project in Vail, Colorado (One Willow Bridge Road)
  •  A new data center for Honda
  •  Corporate headquarters for RE/MAX International
  •  Sonnenalp Resort of Vail

Building the Right Team
Manpower is an issue across the industry in Colorado and throughout the West.  “We have recognized that recruiting the best takes ingenuity and forethought, given the shortage of electricians regionally and nationally,” Thompson says.  “But, we have a leg up on most competitors because we’ve created an environment in which our employees love to work.”

The company is taking a new approach to recruiting, Lawrenz notes.

“We look at it differently than we have in the past,” he states. “We hired professional consultants and our goal is to recruit top quality people – technologically, motivationally and personally.
“Once we do that, we have unique training programs to get them up to speed according to our levels of quality, our commitment to customers and safety. We’re being more proactive, period.”

Looking Forward
Wiedel is confident that Encore will prosper in the future.

“I believe we are building a great company – a company that we can be the best in the business, focused on our core values,” he states.

Lawrenz adds that the company is here to stay.

“We want to build a company that endures,” he emphasizes. “We want to be here with the same culture and same customers in 20 years’ time.”
